https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiddu_Krishnamurti
As a teenager Helen Nearing, raised by Theosophists, had an affair with Jiddu Krishnamurti. He was a sickly Indian boy considered dull and "dim-witted" whom Theosophist Charles Leadbeater discovered on a beach and selected to be a "vessel" for the "World Teacher", an avatar, like Buddha. After years of training by the Theosophists and international promotion as a messiah, Krishnamurti denounced Theosophism and advocated that people should be skeptical of all teachers, authority figures, leaders and movements and instead follow their own paths. Perhaps by so doing he became that World Teacher?
